An account of the resource
Framed rectangular headpiece set within a black lined border depicts a young girl leaning against a tree at the extreme right, looking toward the left. Her hands are folded on a shepherd’s crook, and she is resting her chin on them. The girl has light hair and is wearing a light long-sleeved dress that reaches her ankles. There are sheep scattered throughout the image. Between two trees placed slightly to the left of the centre a crescent moon and clouds are visible. The engraver’s signature “Hare Sc” is in the bottom left corner. The artist’s mark is in the bottom right, an “S” inside of a circle.

A white initial letter “T” in black outline is set within a double ruled box. The letter is surrounded by four daffodils on a hillside. A crescent moon is in the top left corner, with the “T” slightly extending over it. In front of the moon is a set of curved white lines (wind?). Thin black lines extend throughout the background of the top two-thirds of the image, giving the illusion of a night sky. The artist’s mark is in the lower right corner, an “S” inside of a circle.

Framed rectangular tailpiece. Design is created out of black lines on a white background, showing curves of water movement, with polliwogs, tadpoles ,and frogs. Moving from left to right, the polliwogs appear to be developing as tadpoles and into frogs. Engraver’s signature “Hare Sc” is in the lower left corner. An account of the resource
Open inhabited initial letter “S” is in interlaced and curvilnear Celtic design. Inside the upper half of the “S” is a tree with a bird reaching across the branches. The bird is holding one branch in its beak, and has two more wrapped in its wings. The tree trunk extends into the lower half of the letter, where there are stylized bulbs and stalks. A second bird rests upside down under the bottom-left corner of the letter. The letter “S” is filled in with black ink save for a thin white line that extends around the letter. The artist’s mark is on the right, a 3-pointed white plant against a black background contained in a circle.

An account of the resource
An open zoomorphic letter “T” in black line, Celtic arabesque style, containing a bird and a second bird's head. The bird’s head rests atop the horizontal bar of the “T”, while the full bird sits inside the vertical curve of the “T” with its feet extending outside the bottom. A looping knot and string wraps around the neck of the cradled bird and the end of the string is held in the beak of the bird whose head extends from the top right of the letter. The larger bird, featured in the centre of the initial, has a pattern of three white crosses in a box going across its neck. The initial is borderless; the letter “T” is filled in with black ink save for a thin white line. This is the only ornament to repeat itself in the volume; the initial is also used for “<a href="http://ornament.library.ryerson.ca/items/show/21">The Land of Lorne and the Satirists of Taynuilt</a>” on page 110; however, for “Proem” it is much larger in size.

Initial
An enlarged and decorated letter introducing an important section of a text. May be open or boxed. Initials can have different levels of significance, according to the divisions of the text or their place within a program of decoration (see HIERARCHY). Among these levels are Major initials, minor initials (sometimes in several grades), Litterae Florissae, and more frequent minor textual breaks; these latter are marked by Litterae Notabilories, which serve as an adjunct to punctuation. Among the most common forms of initials are decorated, anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, zoo-anthropomorphic, gymnastic, inhabited, or historiated.
