In black line, Celtic arabesque style, the initial contains a bird and a second bird's head. The bird’s head rests atop the horizontal bar of the “T”, while the full bird sits inside the long vertical curve of the “T” with its feet extending outside the bottom. A looping knot and string wraps around the neck of the cradled bird and the end of the string is held in the beak of the bird ,whose head extends from the top right of the letter. The larger bird, featured in the centre of the initial, has a pattern of three white crosses in a box going across its neck. The initial is borderless, the letter “T” is filled in with black ink save for a thin white border. This is the only ornament to repeat itself in the volume; the initial is also used for “Proem” on page 9. The tailpiece depicts a row of daffodils: six tall plants with flowers and two short plants without. Behind the flowers there are three different styles of patterning that make up the background: black with white dots; solid white; and repeating horizontal lines of black and white. The styles of the background may compose a landscape of a sky, hill, and possibly a river. The tailpiece is in landscape orientation. The engraver’s signature “Hare Sc” is in the lower right corner.
