The letter Is composed of one vertical line on the left side and two horizontal lines extending to the right from it. The vertical line is thicker and flares out at the bottom, it flares out at the top as well but only on the left side. The first horizontal line extends out from the top of the letter, it hooks downwards at its right end. It is the thinner than the vertical line. The other horizontal line is halfway down the letter. It is the same thickness as the first horizontal line, and it flares out in both directions vertically. There are leaves, flowers, and vines behind the initial letter and spread out throughout the innermost box of the square. A grotesque head, emerging from a foliated arabesque, faces right in profile in the upper quadrant. This ornament, dating back to classical times, is known as a “foliated grotesque.”</text>

The top of the letter is notched. The letter is composed of two straight vertical lines that meet at a sixty degree angle at the top. The right line is twice the width of the left; both have flared bases. The two lines are joined by a horizontal line two thirds of the way up. A grotesque face with a bald head, visible only from the neck up, rests under the horizontal bar of the letter. A symmetrical leaf covers where the figure’s torso would typically be. The figure has thin leaves draped over their temples. This ornament, dating back to classical times, is known as a “foliated cherub” or “foliated grotesque.” There are leaves, flowers, and vines behind the initial letter and spread out throughout the innermost box of the square.</text>

<text>The tailpiece is a boxed image in landscape orientation. It is the same length as the text and the width is about a third of that. A thin black line cuts through the image horizontally, splitting it into two equal halves. In the centre to right side of the ornament there is the silhouette of a city. On the outskirts there are shadows, or perhaps low rolling hills, which lead up to the first low buildings. The closer to the middle of the silhouette, the taller the buildings, so that near the middle of the image stands one thin building towering over the others. The city could be placed on a large hill, or it could be tiered. The rest if the image is blank apart from the signature “William T. Horton” in the bottom left corner. </text>
