The headpiece is located directly above the title, “THE LOVE OF THE POOR” [caps]. The headpiece is closed within a rectangular border in portrait orientation. The image is inked fully in black, other than the faces of the three figures shown at the bottom of the image, and the window behind them. The window is visibly cracked in the two top corners and the bottom left, and there is another crack near the middle. In the bottom right corner of the windowpane there is a village in silhouette. In front of the window, at the bottom of the image, there are three figures. The elderly woman on the left faces her bearded husband on the right, both in profile to the viewer. Between them facing forward is the soul, or ghost, of their dead daughter. Signature “William T. Horton” is below the bottom right corner, just outside the image itself.

The orrnament is centered below the text, iboxed by a thick black line forming a square. The tailpiece image is a seascape, with a distant boat with a sail. It is divided into a bottom and top half of equal size demarcated by a single line horizon where the water meets the sky. There is a landmass rising up at the edge on the right side of the horizon. In foreground on left stands a cliff with an immediate drop. The image frame of reference suggests that the viewer is standing on the cliff. The colophon is in portrait orientation, boxed in by a double-lined rectangular border. Plain banners run across the bottom and top of the image. Printed at the top is “LEONARD” [caps], and at the bottom is printed “SMITHERS” [caps]. The artwork centred in this frame depicts a man at the extreme left. He is in profile facing to the right. He is wearing a tunic that covers his chest but leaves his arm bare. In his hand he is holding a hatchet, although you can only see the handle and the bottom edge of the blade. He is poised to swing it forward or throw it. The man has shoulder length hair. On the right side of the image stands a tall plant with flame-like leaves. In the background is a brick wall, with a wooden door on which hangs a horseshoe. An opening on the right may be a window.

An account of the resource
The tailpiece is centered under the text in a mouse-tail termination or “cul-de-lampe” formation. Centered in the top of the ornament lies a boy wearing trousers and a wide-brimmed hat , which is tied around the crown with a ribbon. In his left arm rests a scythe, also featuring a ribbon where the handle meets the blade. He is leaning back on a heap of hay. At his feet and from top to bottom of the left side of the image there are several types of flowers, leaves, and long blades of grass. At the bottom of the image rests a drum, horn, violin, and rolled-up sheet music. Signature “AB.” is just below the violin.
