The pictorial ornament extends half way down the letterpress beside the first paragraph. In the foreground, a woman with dark hair stands upright, bending her right knee slightly and leaning back with her upper body. Her head is turned to the left so that only the side of her face is illuminated. The woman is naked beneath a transparent gauzy fabric decorated with flowers. A garland or tiara enrcircles the woman’s head, and a bright full moon behind her head gives the effect of a nimbus. The ornament depicts the inside of a wooden cottage. The word “Batilda” appears on a wooden sign or carved carrtouche on a supporting beam at the left of the cabin. The letter “B” is the largest letter, and the rest of the word follows in three lines as such: “BATI,” “LD,” “A.” Dropping down from the sign, on the outside of the supporting beam, is a bunch of garlic buds. There are four figures in the cabin. In the left background, one figure (male?) appears to be entering the cottage through the open door. In the right foreground, a woman with a patterned hooded cloak is sitting on a chair with her hands in her lap. She is looking downwards towards the flaming hearth, which is along the right wall of the cabin. Only her right-side profile is visible, and she appears to be holding a cloth up to her face. Behind her in the cottage are two female figures, one facing forward, the other in profile facing right; both have naked torsos and loosely wrapped lower bodies. The young woman facing right is in the extreme left foreground of the ornament, leaning forwards on a chair, and bending her right leg. Only her right profile is visible. She has long hair, which is swept to the side. A basket of fruits is on the floor below her bent leg, which rests on the chair. Behind her, in the middle ground, is a young woman facing forward; only the her arm and the top-half of face is visible. Above the hearth at right there is a shelf with a small white oil pot. A patterned ribbon is hung across the door of the cabin. The roof of the cabin slopes downwards to the right, and its foundation of wooden blocks is exposed. On the wooden block in the top left corner, the letters “C.R.” are marked in capital letters. Five doves are on the roof of the cottage; two are in flight. Positioned just outside the frame of the cottage that marks the boundary of the ornament is a gathering of branches/wooden sticks. The capital letters “SPES” [alluding to the Roman goddess Hope] are engraved in a wooden cartouche above the ornament, so that the scene appears to be depicted within the architectural space of a wooden room or portico. Centred within this space is a naked woman with long hair standing on the top of two wooden steps. The woman is leaning on the wall to her right and is looking downwards to the left at the flaming torch she is holding with both hands. Rays of light emerge from the flame and radiate downward in diagonals across the majority of the ornament’s bottom left half. Behind the woman’s left shoulder is a small window in which a single star appears. To the woman’s right, there is white paneled door with a mullioned window. A banner is draped in front of the window. In the extreme foreground to the right of the steps is a wooden balustrade with a domed head covered in vines. A white dove is depicted flying through the middle, lower half of the ornament. Small crocuses and other flowers line the base of the ornament. In the bottom left corner, the artist's initials “CR” are engraved on a small white square. Beneath them the year “1889” appears.
