The open pictorial ornament is in portrait orientation and is centred on the brown cover wrapper. A man is depicted with his back facing the viewer, swimming in the midst of swirling sea waves. He is unclothed, exposing his muscular body, and is wearing a garland around his head. His body is oriented diagonally, with his head closest to the top left region of the ornament, and his lower body closest to the lower left region. His right arm is extended upwards in front of him. He is holding a small piece of coral in his right hand. The man’s right arm is bent in front of him and appears to be reaching into the wave, propelling him forwards. Swirling sea waves surround the swimming man. Small seashells are depicted in the upper right and lower right waves. The artist's initials “CR” are engraved in caps in a small white box with a double-lined black border three-quarters down the right side of the ornament.

The open zoomorphic ornament is in portrait orientation and is centred on the page. Seven white doves create the shape of an inverted triangle composed of four lines in descending numbers: 3, 2, 1, 1. All the doves are identical in shape and in size. They are white, outlined in black, and have one wing outstretched. Each dove carries small branches in their beaks. Initials in a small white box and double-lined black border are depicted to the left of a dove on the third line. Text appears in black ink to the right of the ornament, aligned with the first line of doves. On the first line, “Ballantyne Press,” on the second line, “Edinburgh and,” on the third line, “London.” The year “1897” is printed about an inch below the ornament on the right in black ink

An account of the resource
The initial letter I is capitalized and centred within an open ornament of interlacing vegetation. The letter is white and is set on a black background studded with white dots. The letter is composed of one vertical column which flares at both the top and bottom. There are two black incisions, one at the top and one at the bottom of the vertical column, through which white knot work is woven. White knotwork weaves around the letter, crossing around the base of the vertical column and around the horizontal line at its edges and arches, forming a heart shape or hour-glass figure around its upper portion. There are fleur-de-lys, white petals, leaves, and stems depicted entangled in the knotwork. There is one white lily in the upper left corner of the ornament, one in the upper right, and one underneath the base of the letter in profile.. The black background forms the square shaped ornament.

The initial letter P is capitalized and centred within an open ornament of interlacing knotwork. The letter is white and is set on a black background studded with white dots. The centred letter is composed of one vertical column which flares at both the top and bottom, and one semicircular hook which arches towards the right and attaches to the vertical line. There is a black incision at the top of the vertical column through which white knotwork weaves. White knotwork weaves around the letter at its edges and arches. It is also woven through the black background and around the studded white dots which forms the irregular square shaped ornament.

An account of the resource
The initial letter T is capitalized and centred wiithin an open ornament of interlacing knotwork. The letter is white and is set on a black background studded with white dots. The letter is composed of one horizontal bar and one vertical column. The vertical column is flared at the bottom. The horizontal bar rests centred atop the vertical column, flared on both ends in a downwards diagonal. There are two black incisions on the top of the horizontal bar and one on the upper portion of the vertical column through which white knotwork weaves. White knotwork weaves around the letter, crossing around the base of the vertical column and around the horizontal bar at its edges and arches. It is also woven through the black background and around the studded white dots which form the square shaped ornament. There are two white butterflies with their wings outspread on the left and right wall of the ornament.

The initial letter I is capitalized and centred within an open ornament of interlacing vegetation. The letter is white and is set on a black background studded with white dots. The centred letter is composed of one vertical column which flares at both the top and bottom. There are two black incisions, one at the top and one at the bottom of the vertical column, through, which white knotwork weaves. White knotwork weaves around the letter, crossing around the base of the vertical column and around the horizontal bar at its edges and arches, forming a heart shape or hour-glass figure around its upper portion. There are white fleur-de-lys, petals, leaves, and stems depicted entangled in the knotwork. There is one white lily in the bottom left corner of the ornament, one on the bottom right, and one on top of the letter in profile in the upper central region. The black background forms the irregularsquare shaped ornament.
