Description
An account of the resource
The rectangular headpiece is centred at the top of the page and framed within a black ruled border. The headpiece has a white background with the design in black lines. Flower stems in the form of interlacing ribbons are wrapped within the borders of the headpiece, filling up most of the space. In the centre is a stylized flower, formed by the stems. On either side of this are two stylized flowers budding from the stem and pointing downwards.

Description
An account of the resource
The open tailpiece is centred below the text on the page. Its shape is that of an inverted triangle, with slightly rounded sides. Three birds rest inside the triangle, with the centre of each of their bodies cradled closest to each point of the triangle; the tail of each bird extends to wrap itself under the neck of the bird behind it, so that they are all connected. The points of the triangle are made up of interlaced knotwork.

An account of the resource
Note: This 'legendary romance' is based upon the ancient and still current (though often hopelessly contradictory) legends concerning Brighid, or Bride, commonly known as ‘Muime Chriosd,' i.e. the Foster-Mother of Christ. From the universal honour and reverence in which she was and is held-second only in this respect to the Virgin herself- she is also called' Mary of the Gael.' Another name, frequent in the West, is ‘Brighde-nam-Bratj,' i.e. St. Bride of the Mantle, a name explained in the course of my legendary story. Brighid the Christian saint should not, however, as is commonly done, be confused with a much earlier and remoter Brighid, the ancient Celtic muse of Song.

The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page. There are four curved shapes, two on each side of the headpiece, each facing towards the centre. The shapes are formed out of curved lines, with two spirals within each; the centre part forms into a point and is filled in with black ink. The outer line of each shape interlaces with the one next to it so that they are all connected. The headpiece is symmetrical and horizontally oriented.

An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page. There are four curved shapes, two on each side of the headpiece, each facing towards the centre. The shapes are formed out of curved lines, with two spirals within each; the centre part forms into a point and is filled in with black ink. The outer line of each shape interlaces with the one next to it so that they are all connected.

An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred at the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. Two comic grotesque figures, each wearing a large grape leaf, march in procession towards the left, carrying a pole over their shoulders. The long pole is intricately laced with knotwork and spirals. At the centre of the pole, a stylized bunch of grapes descends from a stylized wine press.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred at the top of the page and is the width of the letterpress. The scrollwork is drawn in black ink and features the neck and head of three intertwined birds. The neck of each is curved towards the left side of the page, and shows a rectangular portion where the neck of the bird beside it is woven through. You can see one eye of each bird. Their beaks extend downwards, and are each interlaced with a line that extends from their body. On the bottom of the tailpiece is a ribbon and knotwork pattern.

An account of the resource
Recounts a story of Saint Malo, in northern Brittany, and its legend of a Great Flood. Penhor, daughter of Bud, was wife of Amel, who tended the flocks of Annan, the great seigneur; Childless Penhor weaves a veil for Holy Mary; gets the baby she prays for, and dedicates her son (Raoul) , when born, to Mary’s divine colour, blue. When flood comes to the village, the church is full, and Penhor, Amel, Raoul can’t get into the church for safety. The waters rise. First Amel tells Penhor to climb on his shoulder, so she and the baby can live; then Amel holds Raoul above her head, so he can live. They all die, but Mary carries the three souls direct to heaven, because of their great love for each other.

An account of the resource
The open tailpiece is a symmetrical design formed out of interlacing ribbons in black outline; a leaf designs at the outer terminus of each ribbon is inset in black, with a white tree pattern. The four corners of the design are terminated with curved flower-like shapes in black and white. At bottom, a central black loop contains a white tree pattern.

Like a star-gazer who would tell us that astronomy is vanity, yet offers in exchange his own descriptions and fancies of the hour, so this contemporary literature of dilettantism thinks of life as a mere phantasmagoria, pleasant to observe but vain to understand. Moreover, amid true and false, good and ill, why limit our interest by any preference? Renan was founder of the school, Jules Lemaltre and Anatole France are its leaders, Maurice Barres its exaggerator. Their qualities and defects are manifest; charm of style and fancy, wide and varied interests, subtle perceptions, refined enjoyment: but corresponding lack of interpretation and of judgment, paralysis of will, incapacity even of conceiving action. Such literature is that of overgrown children; the great masters have always reached manhood, have expressed its qualities, and hence inspire them.
