The pictorial initial P shows the naked figure of Psyche, descending steps against a brick wall, carrying a woven basket with cakes. In front of her, Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades, emerges from a dark and enflamed pit.
An image of the original drawing for this initial appears in the Pageant vol. 1; the wood-engraved version appears a few months later in The Dial vol. 4 (1896), which reproduced specimen type for the Vale Press.

An account of the resource
The decorated initial letter H is capitalized and centred within an open ornament of vegetative interlacing. The letter is white with a black outline and is set on a white and black background. The letter is composed of two vertical columns on the left and right and one horizontal bar connecting the columns. The vertical columns are thicker and flare out at both ends. The horizontal bar is about one third the width of the vertical columns. There are two black incisions, one above the centre on the left column of the letter H and another below the centre on the right column of the letter H. Large feathery leaves (acanthus?) weave through the incisions of the letter. The leaves also swirl around the background of the letter creating an irregular square shape for the ornament.

The open initial letter “B” is decorated with a grid-like pattern of branches and foliage. Along the branches extend round leaves with small vines, and at the end of the branches there are pears. The white letter “B” has a thin black line that runs through its contours, giving it the impression of having a geometric texture, dimension, and shape. The initial is in portrait orientation.

An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament consists of three circular human faces , under which are four heraldic-shaped faces or masks. The three circular faces on the top of the headpiece are equally spaced with one in the centre and one on either side. Each of these three faces is contained within a double-ruled circle, and each has a different expression. The one on the left appears sad; the one in the centre appears to be screaming; the one on the right appears to be sleeping. The four grotesque or heraldic faces below, alternating in a pattern with the circular ones above, are smaller, less-detailed, and more oval-shaped, but also show a variety of expressions: happy, calm, sad, afraid. Each of the four faces has an ornamental headpiece that connects with the circular faces above to form a linking pattern; each of the three circular faces links with the ones below with a repeating pattern of stepped linear shapes.

An account of the resource
The rectangular headpiece is boxed within double-ruled lines and runs the width of the letterpress. It is centered at the top of the page. Pomegranates are located in the top two corners of the headpiece; each contains eighteen circles (stylized seeds) of equal size. Lines extend from each pomegranate, wrapping around and then continuing to fill up the rest of the headpiece. As the lines extend throughout the ornament they intertwine and overlap each other. Two leaves extend out of them, on either side of the berries, towards the centre. The lines end in sharp points at the top centre of the headpiece.

An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred at the top of the page and extends the width of the letterpress. The intricate interlacing design is symmetrical. Each half has a blooming flower (thistle?) with white petals reaching toward the upper corner, and a blown flower curving around to face inwards, with a single tooth-cut leaf below. The stems link and encircle each other in a knotwork pattern set against black irregular shapes.
