It is a line-block reproduction of a pen-and-ink design. The image shows one figure [a Pierrot] riding a winged horse [a Pegasus] in the centre of the page. The horse and figure are facing towards the left; the horse is in profile and the figure is turned to face the viewer. The horse is rearing, with both front legs lifted up into the air. The horse spans the width of the page and is about half of the page height. The horse has a long tail trailing behind. The horse’s mouth is slightly opened and the pointed ears are pulled back. Between the wings sits a male figure dressed like a Pierrot or clown. The figure has his upper body turned to face the viewer, with both arms opened wide and lifted up into the air. He is wearing slippers with a bow on the toe, baggy pants that fall just above the ankle, and a baggy shirt that has buttons up the front. The shirt has large ruffles on the sleeve hems and a large ruffle around the figure’s neck, finished with a ruff and flowing, loosely tied bow. He is wearing a white three-cornered hat. The figure has a long whip in his right hand that extends high above him. A feather pen and paint brush extend over his shoulder behind his back, and a banner or pennant flows behind him. To the right of the centre of the horse and figure, just below the right wing tip, is the small text: “A B.” [caps]. A woman stands on a small step or tiered pedestal, leaning slightly to the left in front of a wooden framed mirror, her back to the viewer. The woman has long dark hair and is wearing a black and white floral patterned robe. Her face is only visible in the reflection of the mirror. The woman has tears streaming down her cheeks and she appears to be frowning. The letter is white with a black outline and is set on a dark interlaced pattern background. The left side of the letter is a vertical column that flares at the top and bottom. The right side of the letter is made from two hooked arches that loop to meet in the middle. They are widest at the peak of the arch. There are swirling, vines behind the initial letter, interwoven at the base and top of the letter, and spread out to each corner of the open rectilinear shape of the ornament. At the base of the ornament, a woman is lying on the ground with her body facing forward and her head turned left in profile. Her upper body is propped up slightly by her bent left arm, on which she also rests her head. Her right arm is bent and tucked into her chest. She is wearing a thin dark robe that covers her body but leaves her upper chest exposed. Her foot protrudes from the bottom of the robe. Behind the woman’s head there is an open notebook, a quill placed upright, and a fountain which is spouting water upwards in a cylindrical shape. Above the woman there are large black and white interlacing and swirling vines. They are woven together by a knotwork of smaller white vines. There are clusters of butterflies and mushrooms scattered on top of the vines. In the bottom left corner the artist's initials “CR” are engraved in a small white box.
