An account of the resource
The open pictorial headpiece is in landscape orientation and is aligned with the width of letterpress beneath it. The ornament depicts three unclothed women with dark skin and long voluminous hair, and four peacocks sitting on a flowerbed. On the right side of the ornament, one woman sits on the ground with her knees tucked into her chest and her arms wrapped around them. Her body is in left profile, but her face is turned to the front. There is a peacock standing behind her. Although it is mostly covered, the peacock’s long neck hovers around the right side of the sitting woman’s back and its right wing is visible protruding out from behind the sitting woman’s left side. In the centre of the ornament, another woman is lying on her back and is nestled in the flowerbed. She is leaning slightly to the right and her head is turned to face the front. Her left arm rests on the flowerbed, and her right arm is raised upwards in the air. Her right knee is raised. Behind her is a large peacock. The peacock’s wing covers the lying woman’s left leg and extends to the extreme bottom right corner of the flowerbed. Its head is raised upwards, and it is looking to the right. To the lying woman’s left, a smaller peacock nestles its long neck and head into her hair. On the left side of the ornament, another woman sits upright, facing forwards. Her knees are bent so that her legs are lying flat on the flowerbed. Her left arm is tucked behind her and her right arm is placed firmly down in front of her. To her left there is a large peacock standing upright and looking towards the left. The artist's reversed initials “CR” appear in the bottom left corner of the ornament in a black frame.

Initial letter G is capitalized. The letter is framed within an open ornament. The letter is white with a black outline and is set on a dark patterned background. The letter is curved and forms three-quarters of a complete circle. It is open on the right side, where the ends fold into a hook shape. The top of the letter concaves downwards and the bottom of the letter curves upwards. There are two whit doves in the ornament. One white dove is positioned on the upper end of the letter with its wings outstretched and wrapped around it. There is another white dove perched behind the letter at the bottom left. There is a white circular fruit in the centre of the letter, behind the top left corner, and at the lower end. There are small black leaves with white stems and small white flowers behind and around the letter to form a rectangular shape.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred at the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. Two comic grotesque figures, each wearing a large grape leaf, march in procession towards the left, carrying a pole over their shoulders. The long pole is intricately laced with knotwork and spirals. At the centre of the pole, a stylized bunch of grapes descends from a stylized wine press.

The historiated initial letter “L” is contained within a rectangular frame divided into three horizontal sections. A rising sun emerges from the top of the frame in the top section. The bottom section depicts curved lines, possibly denoting water or wind. The middle and largest section contains the letter “L,” outlined in black and taking up the height and width of its bounding box. Also contained in the middle section of the rectangle is a black shield or escutcheon on which is depicted a rampant lion. The initial is in portrait orientation.

An account of the resource
The open tailpiece is a symmetrical design formed out of interlacing ribbons in black outline; a leaf designs at the outer terminus of each ribbon is inset in black, with a white tree pattern. The four corners of the design are terminated with curved flower-like shapes in black and white. At bottom, a central black loop contains a white tree pattern.

Like a star-gazer who would tell us that astronomy is vanity, yet offers in exchange his own descriptions and fancies of the hour, so this contemporary literature of dilettantism thinks of life as a mere phantasmagoria, pleasant to observe but vain to understand. Moreover, amid true and false, good and ill, why limit our interest by any preference? Renan was founder of the school, Jules Lemaltre and Anatole France are its leaders, Maurice Barres its exaggerator. Their qualities and defects are manifest; charm of style and fancy, wide and varied interests, subtle perceptions, refined enjoyment: but corresponding lack of interpretation and of judgment, paralysis of will, incapacity even of conceiving action. Such literature is that of overgrown children; the great masters have always reached manhood, have expressed its qualities, and hence inspire them.

An account of the resource
The white letter “T” appears against a black sky in the background of an image in which two hunters lie on a hill. The male hunter lies behind the female hunter. Both are resting on their left arms, while the right arm of the man is wrapped around the woman. Both are looking out beyond the right side of the image. While the left side of the image has sharp lines that create the side of a rectangle, the right side fades out and blends into the page, forcing the text into irregular alignment.

He is poised to swing it forward or throw it. The man has shoulder length hair. On the right side of the image stands a tall plant with flame-like leaves. The initial word “NEVER” is positioned in the top centre of the pictorial initial and is engraved into a wooden cartouche extending at the top left of a wooden chair or settle. In the foreground, a naked woman is seated on the wooden chair, whose back forms the right side of the ornament and connects to the engraved carotouche. She is facing inwards, to the right corner, so that only her left side profile is visible. She is peering into a small round mirror which reflects part of her face. The woman’s long hair covers her face, falls behind her shoulders, and drapes down below her feet. Above her head hangs a clock or other round device. Small plants/roots are depicted on the left side of the wooden mantle’s roof. Beneath the woman, below her feet, is a small wooden bucket, positioned atop a pile of beetroots with long swirling stems and white feathery leaves which line the left wall of the ornament and reach upward towards the woman’s legs. The artist’s initials ,“CR,” are marked in capital letters on a small scroll-shaped cartouche, among the beetroots at the bottom left of the ornament.
