Above these are the star of Solomon for the temporal greatness of Israel, and to the right the sacred name. So for the Greeks with their vivid practical and intellectual life --the galley, of trade or of Ulysses, balanced by the aegis of Pallas. With the Roman order, patrician and plebeian orders become clearly differentiated. Hence for the former, the Standard for power, colonization, conquest [25] and empire, with the Fasces for law and justice as the virtual religion and science characteristic of old Rome at its best; while also for the slave, the chain of temporal bondage on one hand, but the sacred monogram. badge of enfranchisement, upon the other. "So for the Middle Ages. The helmet of chivalry is followed by the charter of the borough, guarantee of civic democracy. The headpiece features two butterflies, in an exact mirror. Surrounding both butterflies is a sharp geometric pattern. The focal point of the headpiece is a closed medallion that contains a portrait of a woman in profile. The left side of her face is shown and she looks slightly downwards, her light-coloured hair falling just below her shoulders. The background of the circular image is a pattern of daisies taking up all of the space not occupied by the woman, and in her hair there is a crown of five daisies strung together. Extending from the focal point of the headpiece are four large spirals coming out of arabesques. Thin, black lines extend out to form smaller spirals. The engraver’s mark “Hare Sc” is at the bottom left of the focal circle.
