In the left region of the ornament, a centaur is depicted in right profile facing forward. He is resting on the ground alongside a pond or pool in a garden. His eyes are open wide, and his mouth is agape. The centaur has long hair which protrudes from the top of his head and extends down his back, a long tail, and interlaced garland around his body. The lower half of the centaur’s body is muscular and large. His four legs are bent and tucked closely beside his body. The upper half of his body is propped up on a thick branch which appears to be extending from the pond. The centaur’s left arm is tucked around his neck to support his reclining body and resting head, and his right arm is bent beside him also to support his head. In the right region of the image, there is an unclothed woman lying down on a brick pedestal decorated with a butterfly. She is in left profile, but her body is facing upwards and her head is tilted far back. Her long dark hair falls behind her and gathers at the base of the pedestal. A white rabbit’s head is peeking out from behind the fallen hair. The woman’s right arm, which is decorated with ivy, is bent behind her and appears to be reaching into her hair. Her left arm is cradling a tipped pitcher or urn, which is spilling water into the pond in the centre of the ornament. There is a bird making small waves in the pond. Petals and tree stumps are scattered in the background of the image. Thick interlacing and swirling branches surround the outer regions of the ornament. There is a small snail sitting on top of the outer branch in the upper left corner of the ornament. The artist's reversed initials “CR” are contained in a black box, attached to the ornament at its left side. Each merman sits on a large scallop seashell. Their front hands hold on to a spiral that runs from their corresponding seashell. Their other hands reach out and hold on to another two spirals, which are connected by a black shape that has six of its own spirals, interlacing with the ones held by the mermen. The second spirals that the mermen are holding each have six black rectangles connecting to the top; each rectangle is filled with black ink, except for a white line down the centre. The capital letters “SPES” [alluding to the Roman goddess Hope] are engraved in a wooden cartouche above the ornament, so that the scene appears to be depicted within the architectural space of a wooden room or portico. Centred within this space is a naked woman with long hair standing on the top of two wooden steps. The woman is leaning on the wall to her right and is looking downwards to the left at the flaming torch she is holding with both hands. Rays of light emerge from the flame and radiate downward in diagonals across the majority of the ornament’s bottom left half. Behind the woman’s left shoulder is a small window in which a single star appears. To the woman’s right, there is white paneled door with a mullioned window. A banner is draped in front of the window. In the extreme foreground to the right of the steps is a wooden balustrade with a domed head covered in vines.
