Description
An account of the resource
The open pictorial ornament is in portrait orientation and is centred on the brown cover wrapper. A man is depicted with his back facing the viewer, swimming in the midst of swirling sea waves. He is unclothed, exposing his muscular body, and is wearing a garland around his head. His body is oriented diagonally, with his head closest to the top left region of the ornament, and his lower body closest to the lower left region. His right arm is extended upwards in front of him. He is holding a small piece of coral in his right hand. The man’s right arm is bent in front of him and appears to be reaching into the wave, propelling him forwards. Swirling sea waves surround the swimming man. Small seashells are depicted in the upper right and lower right waves. The artist's initials “CR” are engraved in reverse, in caps, in a small white box with a double-lined black border three-quarters down the right side of the ornament.

Description
An account of the resource
The colophon is positioned three-quarters up the page, in landscape orientation, contained in a triple white-lined border. In the central foreground, a woman is seated on a black and white chest which is positioned on a platform. She is facing forwards. The woman is wearing a white dress with a white shawl that drapes around her shoulders and is fastened in the middle of her chest by a flower-shaped brooch. Her hair is tied up behind her and her long neck is exposed. Her left arm is held downwards by her side. Her left hand is holding a bouquet of flowers, some of which are depicted falling on the pedestal. Her right arm is bent and is holding an open, blank book. There is a large rose positioned above the book, with two stems extending downwards from the base of the flower and onto each page of the open book. The background is patterned with white interlacing vines, scattered flowers and thorns. A thin white banner runs across the inside of the ornament and scrolls behind the woman’s head. The banner reads, “ Above the ornament and slightly to the left, the letterpress text reads: “Printed at the Ballantyne Press London and Edinburgh.” Below the ornament and slightly to the left, the letterpress reads: “Sold by Charles H Shannon at the Vale in Chelsea. mdcccxciii.”

Description
An account of the resource
The decorated initial letter J is capitalized and centred within an open ornament of interlacing vegetation. The letter is white with a black outline and is set on a white and black background. The letter is composed of one vertical column, which flares to the left and right at the top, and flares in an upward curve to the left at the bottom. There are two black incisions, one at the centre of the letter and another just above, from which protrude parts of an interlacing vine. There are interlacing and knotted vines weaving throughout the background of the ornament. The vines are thin and have small stems, thorns, and leaves protruding from their ends. On the right side of the ornament, the upmost and lowermost vines are each bundled together with string. In the right lower corner, three berries hang from a swirling vine. The vines are spread out to form a square shape around the letter.

Old Kitty Initial Letter T
Subject
The topic of the resource
Textual Ornament
Description
An account of the resource
The decorated initial letter T is capitalized and centred within an open ornament of interlacing vegetation. The letter is white with a black outline and is set on a white and black background. The letter is composed of one horizontal bar and one vertical column. The vertical column is centred in the ornament, and is flared at the bottom, more so on the left side. The horizontal bar rests centred atop the vertical column. It is flared on both ends in a diagonal shape pointing downward. There are two black incisions on the letter, one at its centre and another just above it, from which protrude parts of interlacing vines, which weave throughout the background of the letter. The vines are bundled at their centres and have small stems, thorns, and leaves protruding from them. Below the top left portion of the letter, there is a small cluster of grapes. There is another, slightly larger cluster of grapes adjacent to the centre of the letter on the left side. The vines are spread out to form a rectilinear shape around the letter.

Chorus of Grecian Girls Tailpiece
Subject

Textual Ornament
Description
An account of the resource
The anthropomorphic open tailpiece is in landscape orientation, positioned beneath the text, and extending three-quarters of the letterpress’s width. The ornament depicts eight women who appear to be dancing or gathering. Each woman is barefoot and is dressed in a white gown. There are three women in the left region of the ornament. The woman furthest to the left is standing upright in right profile. She is wearing a white bonnet. Her hands are beneath her gown, lifting it upwards. There is another woman standing to her right who is facing forwards. Her hair is extremely long and uplifted, and it extends throughout the upper portion of the ornament to the extreme right. Another woman is kneeling on the ground in front of them. She is in right profile and is looking upwards towards the woman with the long hair. She holds the bottom of her dress up off the ground with her right hand. In the central and right regions of the ornament, there are six women. The woman in the centre, furthest from the foreground, is in profile facing left. She is holding her dress with her left hand and reaches leftward with her right arm. She has long curly hair which is also uplifted and extends leftward to meet the hair of the woman with the extremely long hair on the left. Another woman is standing in front of her and slightly to the right. She is also holding her dress with her left hand and reaches leftward with her right arm. In front of her, a woman is in the same position, but standing further to the right. She is wearing a white bonnet. In the extreme right, there are two women facing each other. The woman closer to the left is wearing a bonnet and is facing right in profile. Both of her arms are outstretched in front of her. The woman closest to the right is standing in left profile. Her face and her long hair are visible, but her body is mostly covered by the woman on her right. There are sprouting flowers at scattered on the ground beneath the women’s feet.

An account of the resource
The decorated initial letter I is capitalized. The letter is set in the centre of an open ornament composed of interlacing vines. The letter is white with a black outline and is set on a white and black background. The letter is composed of one vertical column, which flares at both the top and bottom. There is a black incision at its centre from which protrudes part of an interlacing vine. There are interlacing and knotted vines weaved through the centre of the letter and behind it. The vines are bundled at their centres and have small stems, thorns, and leaves protruding from them. They are spread out to form a square shape around the letter.
