An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. The ornament consists of three circular human faces , under which are four heraldic-shaped faces or masks. The three circular faces on the top of the headpiece are equally spaced with one in the centre and one on either side. Each of these three faces is contained within a double-ruled circle, and each has a different expression. The one on the left appears sad; the one in the centre appears to be screaming; the one on the right appears to be sleeping. The four grotesque or heraldic faces below, alternating in a pattern with the circular ones above, are smaller, less-detailed, and more oval-shaped, but also show a variety of expressions: happy, calm, sad, afraid. Each of the four faces has an ornamental headpiece that connects with the circular faces above to form a linking pattern; each of the three circular faces links with the ones below with a repeating pattern of stepped linear shapes.

An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centered on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. At the centre of the ornament is a human head. The head is angled slightly to the right, with the eyes appearing to look down. Long, wavy hair extends up from the top of the head before curling downwards, ending in a slight spiral at the bottom of the ornament. Sharp double-ruled lines extend from the bottom of the head. These lines go towards either side of the ornament, creating a geometric shape of parallel diagonal lines. There is also a ribbon on either side, interlacing with the pattern and forming a terminal knot.

Description
An account of the resource
The tailpiece is centred under the text. The tailpiece is in the shape of a rounded square; The symmetrical tailpiece is made up of four identical quadrants, giving the effect of a kaleidoscopic design. Each quadrant contains a stylized trumpet flower pointing toward its respective corner,terminating in a circle. The centre of the ornament features a spiral design around a white circle. Angular lines in a toothed geometric pattern decorate the interior spaces of each quadrant.

Description
An account of the resource
The open headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. Two human faces are equally spaced on either side of the centre of the ornament. A geometric pattern consisting of sharp diagonal lines forming a triangular shape surrounds each face. On either side of each face are interlacing ribbons that form large knots on the top corner of the headpiece. The ornament is almost identical on both sides; however, there are slight differences where the ribbons interlace. Some sections are filled with black ink.

An account of the resource
The open tailpiece is centred under the text. At its centre is a human face. Sharp diagonal lines extend out from the face, forming multiple points both on either side and below the face. Wings extend from either side of the face; the wings begin with a curved pattern, before extending out in sharp diagonal lines. The wings are at an angle, so that their tips point towards the top two corners of the page. Interlacing ribbons extend from the the top of the face, forming two knots at the top of the ornament. More interlacing knotwork extends from the bottom of the wings, forming a point at the bottom centre. Two spirals extend out from either side of these ribbons.

Description
An account of the resource
The open anthropomorphic headpiece is centred on the top of the page and runs the width of the letterpress. At the centre of the ornament is a human face, facing front, resting chin on interlaced hands, with elbows extended to the edge of the ornament. The figure’s hair splits into two sections on either side of the face, coming down from the top of the head, and ending in a slight curve at the bottom of the ornament. On either side of the face there are interlacing ribbons that form a knot under each arm. Wings extend from either side of the face. Each wing is separated into three sections and filled with a pattern that appears to be feathers or leaves.

ARGUMENT.-I. An appreciation of the full biological import of Winter is not altogether easy for us, here and now. We must think of peoples with less artificial environment, of more wintry regions, and of Glacial Epochs. II. The Sagas of the Biology of Winter are to be found in such stories as those of the Sleeping Beauty and Balder. III. The astronomical facts bear out our vaguer impressions. IV. Reactions to the cold and scarcity of Winter are very variable :-flight, concealment, colour-change, and so on. V. Hibernation in its varying degrees is a common solution. VI. Yet to many death is inevitable, Winter is the time of intensest elimination. This affects not only individuals, but races. The tree of life grows, but it is also pruned. The only biological consolation is that the fruition of the tree has improved.

Description
An account of the resource
The irregular geometric headpiece is centred on the top of the page. At its centre is a human face. Surrounding the face is a triangular shape and a series of geometric lines. The lines extend out from the triangular shape to create the four corners of the ornament, forming an open rectangular shape.. On either side of the face are curved ribbons, interlacing in a knotwork pattern at the corners.
